The battle system is limited and unbalanced. Zestiria is a game that will tell you ignorance is evil (cant remember the exact skit so the wording is probably different, it's after the earth dungeon) when anybody with a brain could tell you why that's just ridiculous. If you like Tales for the writing then a lot of the series' message against suicide and needless death are subverted in Zestiria with little given reason and the characters are 1-note anime stereotypes who tell puns, act stupid, or act mean to each other in almost every skit.

I'm probably going to re-play through the US released Tales series in its entirety once I'm done them all, and even though my experience with Zestiria was lukewarm, I look forward to going through it again and will probably re-play Berseria first with its plot fresh in my mind. I actually feel like you're left in the dark about some world building and plot points that playing Berseria first with would have made speculating about when you get to Zestiria a lot more fun. I'm playing through Berseria now, and idk if this is a popular opinion because I've yet to see anyone state it, but I think if I actually played through Berseria first, I would have enjoyed and appreciated Zestiria a lot more. So, don't know if you know, but Berseria is a prequel that predates Zestiria by 1000 years chronologically even though it was released after it.Ī lot of people on forums I've seen that played Berseria without having played Zestiria were miffed that they were missing major references to plot lines, or at least thought they were. I heard a lot of bad things about Zestiria but I tried it anyway and now rate it as one of my top favorites I hear a lot of good things about Vesperia but it's near the bottom of my Tales list. Battle system aside, it has really unique lore for the series (imo) and a lovable cast of party members, and in general just stands out from the rest of the series as a trope-breaker in a few ways.īut bottomline, I wouldn't lean too heavily on the praise/skepticism you hear from others unless they're a friend who knows your specific interests or something. Worst case scenario, if the system's rough on you, put it on an easier difficulty. If that's the case, maybe rent it if you have Gamefly or wait until a good sale (I got my copy on Steam a while back for about $10) just in case it's not your thing. It does build off of Graces' battle system somewhat (Zestiria isn't as slow or clunky imo) so if you disliked Graces for that reason, you might have a problem with this one.

I'd break it down to whether you're the open-minded type who acknowledges that no game is perfect - in which case give it a try - or the type to compare every new thing you play to your past favorite games and keep a really high standard (no sarcasm/disdain meant there, some people just do this and it constantly influences their opinions) in which case you might be nitpicky with this one. Some like myself adore it and rank it among our top favorite Tales, others hate it. Like most games in general, I think it's a "your mileage may vary" type of game.
